A Report of Four cases of Gastrointestinal tract injury after Radiation Therapy




Abstract
Radiation therapy has provided a powerful and effective mortality for control of cancer. Now, in Korea, there are many cervical cancer patient who had radiation therapy only and adjuvant radiation therapy. In spite of above benifit, there are frequent complications accepted as the penalty for cure of life threatening neoplastic disease.
The most common complication, skin injury, have been reduced by the modern supravoltage therapy and other improvements in the methodology However, injuries of the gastrointestinal and gastrourinary tract have remained a problem of substantial surgical impotence. Above all complication rate of the gastrointestinal tract is estimated about 10%
The major gastrointestinal tract complications are intestinal obstruction (esp. rectal stenosis) and rectal bleeding.
Recently, we have experienced 4 cases of radiation induced injury of the gastrointestinal
tract patients (2 cases of intestinal obstruction, one case is small intestinal obstruction and
the other case is rectal stenosis) and 2 cases of the rectal ?bleeding. We report above 4 cases with review of its literatures.
